Welcome!

Welcome to the September issue of the Safety Suzy Newsletter

This month we're commemorating 9/11 and all of the people who lost their lives that day. Despite the time distance, we still feel the pain this event brought to thousands of families across the U.S. and the American nation as a whole. At FED, we've written extensively on 9/11 and the aftermath which led to many more thousands of people being exposed to harmful particles in the ensuing days.

We'd also like to celebrate Labor Day by remembering those who lost their lives while working to build a better and stronger USA. Each week, 100 workers die in the U.S. due to traumatic injuries at work while 2,000 die as a result of occupational exposure to hazardous substances. This further highlights the urgent need for better and more effective safety training that will keep employees out of danger. Our course schedule is listed at the bottom for your convenience.

OSHA Releases a New Individual Injury Estimator

In order to raise awareness of the cost of workplace injuries, OSHA has released a new Individual Injury Estimator as part of its Safety Pays Program. Companies can use it to see how much more they'd need to generate in sales in order to compensate for different types of injury and the direct/indirect costs associated with it.

We've recently released Three Asbestos Air Sampling Charts (Federal, NYS, & NYC) which you can use in the field or the office to ensure project monitors and project air sample technicians have all the information they need to collect ambient and clearance asbestos air samples in accordance with the requirements.  The charts put the information at their fingertips.

  • 21% of victims of workplace homicide worked in sales or related occupations;
  • 79% of all workplace homicides were results of shootings;
  • Correction officers, security guards, and law enforcement officers were the top three professions exposed to non-fatal workplace violence;

Stay at Home When You're Sick

CDC reminds people that an important way to reduce the spread of illness is to keep sick people away from those who are not sick.

Staying home until at least 24 hours after symptoms start can lower the risk of spreading infectious diseases to other people.

Schools and early care and education (ECE) programs should allow flexible and supportive paid sick leave policies and practices, following laws and regulations. Schools should also provide excused absences for students who are sick, avoid policies that
incentivize coming to school while sick, and support children who are learning at home if they are sick. Employers should also advise and encourage all employees who are sick to stay at home.

OSHA Expands Its Criteria for Placement in the Severe Violator Enforcement Program

In order to improve the compliance with workplace safety standards and reduce work-related injuries and illnesses, OSHA broadened its criteria to include violations of all hazards. This can have an impact on more industries that were previously not affected by such regulations.

The new criteria replaces OSHA's June 18, 2010, Severe Violator Enforcement Program.
