Angelo Garcia, III is founder and president of Future Environment Designs (FED), one of the nation’s leading indoor air quality, industrial hygiene and safety service companies that is based in Syosset, New York. He has been a consultant working with government and industry on issues relating to asbestos and indoor air quality since he founded the company in 1988.
An industrial hygienist since 1981, Mr. Garcia is certified on the national level as a Council-Certified Indoor Environmental Consultant (CIEC), Indoor Air Quality Professional (CIAQP) and Indoor Air Quality Consultant (CIAQC) and has achieved the highest level of accreditation in the field. His background includes extensive training from various city agencies including the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA); the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD); the New York State Department of Labor (NYS DOL); United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) and the New York City Department of Environmental Protection (NYC DEP). Before starting his own firm, Mr. Garcia held various prestigious positions at many top-consulting firms in the New York area that specialize in environmental and industrial hygiene. Early in his career, he worked as an inspector for the New York City Department of Personnel inspecting a number of city buildings for asbestos.
Mr. Garcia is highly regarded for his knowledge as an indoor air quality specialist and has given his views on the impact poor air quality has on people’s lives across the nation. His work has been featured on the popular reality show, “Treasure Hunters,” where he performed confined space entry air testing. He has been interviewed on News 12 Long Island regarding asbestos and has been featured in numerous publications including The New York Times (“Turmoil Over Mold In Buildings”). He has given testimony to the New York Senate Standing Committee on Environmental Conservation and Health regarding toxic mold. In addition, to assisting attorneys throughout the country by helping them gather and interpret data regarding mold.
Currently, Mr. Garcia and his team are working on the development of a moisture and mold prevention plan for a condominium conversion project that is underway in Tribeca. Earlier this year, he was one of two asbestos investigators onsite at the Greenpoint Terminal fire in Brooklyn’s Navy Yard. Part of his job was to develop an asbestos safety program for demolition workers that encounter asbestos during the demolition process. His company is one of the few training providers on Long Island that offers mold remediation, indoor air quality and asbestos training seminars to consultants, contractors, facility managers, building engineers, maintenance managers and maintenance staff across the tri-state area. He is presently working with several companies and universities across Long Island and upstate New York. When he isn’t teaching a course he is doing speaking engagements. His most recent presentation was on the new asbestos regulations at KeySpan.
Additional highlights of Mr. Garcia’s career include developing innovative and educational programs that improve indoor air quality. He has generated and initiated an externship program between New York Institute of Technology and Grumman Aerospace Corporation. He co-developed microbiological protocols for the removal of stachybotras chartarum (toxic fungus) from several apartments in Manhattan. He performed monthly safety audits at the H&H bagel plant that included respiratory protection, lockout/tagout, crane safety and confined space entry to be in compliance with OSHA regulations. He also developed and wrote respiratory protection and hazardous communication programs for his client Atta Inc., one of the largest commercial art companies in Manhattan.
A person, who is passionate about the environment, Mr. Garcia often makes charitable contributions to many non-profit organizations including The San Diego Wildlife Animal Park and Zoo; The Audubon Society; The Philadelphia Zoo; The Wildlife Conservation Society and The World Wildlife Fund. He is also a board member of the Theodore Roosevelt Sanctuary and Audubon Center.
Some of the organizations he is involved with that provide leadership and guidance in the field of indoor air quality, industrial hygiene and safety, on the local and national level, include: the Association of Energy Engineers; American Indoor Air Quality Association; International Society for Indoor Air Quality and Climate; American Society of Safety Engineers and American Society of Heating, Refrigeration and Air-Conditioning Engineers and U.S. Green Building Council.
